Barnum traces the career of America’s greatest showman, Phineas Taylor (P.T.) Barnum, from 1835 to 1880, the year he joined James A. Bailey to form the Barnum and Bailey Circus. Barnum is the prince and pioneer of what he calls “the noble art of humbug”, the coat of varnish he puts on the hard facts of life; as he sees it, people pay him for the privilege of being fooled and hoodwinked. He brings together people that others call “freaks” and “aberrations” – people he sees as having gifts from God that lift them above the crowd. Such people include Joice Heth, the Oldest Woman Alive; Charles Sherwood Stratton, aka General Tom Thumb, the Smallest Man in the World; and Jenny Lind, the operatic soprano known as the Swedish Nightingale. Barnum’s closest companion, however, is his wife Charity – “Chairy” – whose wit is easily as sharp as his, and who doesn’t hesitate to stand up to him and call him out when she knows he’s making a mistake. She has strong principles and an iron will, but when it comes to her husband, and when it comes to humbug, she can give him a run for his money. Barnum follows Barnum, Chairy, their friends, and their enemies, through sickness, health, sadness, happiness, defeat and triumph, from the sidewalks of Bridgeport to the Greatest Show on Earth.
